Podcasting
Possibly half-baked Friday afternoon thought: If you own a local radio station, you should be setting up a side business for selling podcast advertising. The same sales team doing the work to sell radio adverts can also sell podcast ads.
While editing a client’s podcast, I learned about t.ly as a very short URL shortener. Plus it’s run by an indie dev, so you’re not giving money to some faceless corporation.
I wonder if the upcoming macOS game mode will also be a good “podcasting mode” option for podcasters?
Admittedly a privileged perspective (Ben Thompson is a tech writer and podcaster, appears to have a lot of money, etc.), but his vision of Apple Vision is both compelling and sad at the same time.
Buried in my podcast editing contract is a bullet point that reads “if you imitate a wrestler from the 80’s or 90’s at any point in your podcast, I am obligated to include a snippet of their entrance music”. I’ve never had to act on that… until today.
I’ve taken enough words into my earballs via editing podcasts about TypeScript that you’d think I’d understand what it is. But I still don’t really get it. And I’m fine with that tbh.
I know HTML + CSS things, and I’m a expert level FrontPage ‘98 user - why move forward from perfection?
Top podcast hosting companies by episode share is interesting. I assume Spotify for Podcasters is so high because they folded in all the free formerly Anchor based podcasts?
Your weekly(ish) reminder that I send out a newsletter weekly(ish) with links and thoughts I’ve collected throughout the past week(ish). Sign up here if you’re interested.
Ignore if you’re not. 😀
If you’re a guest on someone’s podcast, it’s important to remember that fact: you’re the guest. Even though you’re brought on to tell your story or be an expert on a topic, you’re still the guest. Try to avoid taking over the show, interrupting the host, etc. Let them lead you.
Haven’t had any doggie interruptions on client podcasts in a while, and then randomly the last 2 episodes I’ve editing have featured some barking from furry friends.
Not a complaint. A pup is way more pleasing to hear than a lawn mower this time of year.
Did I know I was going to be sourcing hurdy-gurdy covers of Linkin Park on YouTube as part of my work on a podcast this morning? No.
Was I happy to spend 20 minutes diving down the rabbit hole of hurdy-gurdy covers this morning? Absolutely yes.
Podcast tip: If you want people to listen to your podcast, have some sort of subscribe page so people can subscribe to your podcast. If you don’t want listeners, by all means, just put up a blog post with a podcast player embed and revel in the massive “listens to podcast on a web page” audience.
A cool thing I discovered is that the audio repair tool I use has a bug where if the hard drive runs out of space, it just repairs part of the file without telling me anything was wrong. So guess who’s spent hours “fixing” audio files when I should have been cleaning up hard drive space?
Apple Podcasts (iOS / iPadOS, and macOS versions released today) is getting some new features today.
How has it been 3 years since I published this how to record a podcast with Audio Hijack tutorial? What is time even? Watching it and seeing pre-pandemic Chris sitting their naively unaware of what’s about to hit the world. 😞 Time to update it for @RogueAmoeba’s v4 of the app!
I dig tools like Descript for editing - but I feel like I’ve stared at audio this way for long enough that I can almost see the words as I’m editing. I’d still love a way to have a text searchable archive of shows, which is where Descript is super handy. #podcasteditor

I’m awful at goal setting in longer term situations. I know my business is at a plateau, and it’s fine, but beyond some sort of capitalist “get more money so I can work less?” thought, I’m overwhelmed at the thought of small changes to grow. Maybe I’ll learn by osmosis. :)

I fired up Twitter to figure out how I wanted to remove past tweets and archive my account, only to be connected via a recommendation to a potential client. As much as I want to 💩on the bird place, it has given me connections to most of my current and past #podcast clients.
Happy old fashioned happy hour to those celebrating. AMA while I edit this podcast. ngl.link/lemonpodc…
