👏 Podcasting’s unique selling proposition is not video:

“I think that the rush to video is possibly the biggest lowlight, not just for last year, but the biggest lowlight in the last five years of the industry.”

U2’s The Edge, also a happy Shure SM7B podcaster?

You’d think professional musicians would have better mic technique though. It looks pretty far away from him, but might just be perspective. 😆

I did a TikTok Live for ~3 minutes and “earned” $0.01 so… I guess I can finally shut down the podcast editing business and focus on TikTok in 2025.

My first attempt with Apple Intelligence + making a digital selfie. Not sure about the headphone placement, what kind of podcast is all code, and why my right hand is definitely 5 fingers with no visible thumb?

A AI generated version of me with headphones poorly placed on my head, 5 fingers + no visible thumbs, and a keyboard in front of me.

The Vinyl Cafe lives on in another generation thanks to my youngest’s teacher. 😊

Riverside, a tool I and many other podcasters use to record remote conversations, just raised another $30 million dollars but what stood out to me was this quote at the end:

“The company is not currently profitable but aims to achieve that goal by the end of 2026.”

Maybe you’ve heard of “software as a service” or SAAS businesses. While editing a client’s podcast I heard the term “cybercrime as a service” business. Because of course there is. And I’m sure CAAS is a booming industry to get into.

It’s wild talking to my dad about how he got clients for financial services over his career vs how I get clients for my podcast editing business. “I met this guy from BC, Justin Jackson, because he listened to a podcast I did 10 years ago… he recommended me to a fitness guru in Utah.”

Nice!

My podcast completion rate from Pocket Casts was 69% in 2024

Shameless affiliate link for the only podcast hosting platform that I genuinely enjoy using and am delighted when a client is already on it: Transistor has a pretty sweet Black Friday deal running right now if you’ve been thinking about setting up a show. AMA!

Speaking of not writing regularly - I’m updating my personal newsletter description now that Elon has helped ween me off Twitter. I’ve got a month to get another issue out or I’ll be breaking my promise of “at minimum once per year”. 😆

Apple’s most popular podcasts of 2024 in the U.S. feels like a pretty good sampling of what I assumed Americans listen to, leaning towards true crime, conspiracy / politics / news, and celebrities having conversations. Any of your favs make the list?

Further proof of Bluesky being included in the conversation: Transistor.fm allows you to pull a person’s profile from Bluesky now. Super handy feature I use all the time on some podcasts I work on.

At least Neville’s putting all my podcasting gear to good use while I try to figure out if / what I should do for a podcast. 😆😴

Inspired by a recent convo in the ShopTalk Show Discord, should you bleep / edit swears in your podcast? (TLDR: IMHO it doesn’t really matter as long as you’re consistent with what your listeners expect of your show.)

2024 seems to be the year some tech companies are “taking their podcast production in house”. It feels like the ying / yang of how these things go, just sucks to be on the yang of it. Or is it the ying?

(p.s. give your contractors a heads up so they can plan accordingly.)

It’s the time of year when the sound of the birds flying overhead on their journey south can be loud enough that I hear them with my headphones on while editing a podcast. #WinterIsComing

RIP iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle. I think parents would love an iPad nano style device with a basic GPS tracking feature built in so kids could listen to music or podcasts, and do some sort of of basic messaging.

First time in my podcast editing career that someone was having contractions while recording the podcast. 🎉 (No word on whether they’ve had the baby yet!)

With Chartable, a podcast analytics app, being shut down by Spotify after they acquired it 2 years ago (who saw that coming??), Dan at Bumper has some good options for what should you use instead..
